If a breaker will not reset, trips again and again, or feels hot, call 657-201-1586. We connect you with a licensed Orange County electrician who can test the breaker and circuit, replace a failed breaker with the correct listed type, and tell you if the panel itself needs work. Replacing a single breaker is usually a short visit.
Signs a breaker needs attention
- It trips again immediately or within minutes of being reset
- It will not stay in the ON position
- It feels warm, smells burnt or shows scorch marks
- It is a brand known for problems, such as Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco
- Lights dim on that circuit when large appliances start
Breaker or panel?
A single failed breaker is a quick fix. Repeated failures, melted bus bars, rust from coastal air, or an obsolete panel are signs the whole panel should be replaced. In that case, see electrical panel upgrade and replacement.
Use the right breaker
Breakers must match the panel's listing. "Universal" or mismatched breakers can overheat and may fail inspection. Newer code also calls for AFCI or GFCI breakers on many circuits, so replacing a breaker can be a good moment to add that protection.
Obsolete breaker brands in older Orange County homes
Two panel brands turn up often in older Orange County houses, and both are reasons to have the whole panel assessed rather than just one breaker swapped.
Federal Pacific Stab-Lok. Independent testing has documented Stab-Lok breakers failing to trip on overcurrent at rates well above other makes, with two-pole and GFCI units the worst affected. There has never been a US recall, so there is no manufacturer replacement programme and the cost of replacing one of these panels falls to the homeowner. A breaker that does not trip gives no warning of its own: the circuit simply keeps carrying more current than it is rated for.
Zinsco. The commonly reported failure mode is at the bus bar, where a breaker can lose firm contact, arc, and melt into the panel while still appearing to be switched on. Scorch marks inside the panel door, or a breaker that will not seat firmly, are what an electrician looks for.
In both cases, swapping individual breakers is rarely the answer, because sound replacement parts for either brand are hard to source. The usual recommendation is a full panel replacement.
Coastal corrosion. In Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach, San Clemente and Dana Point, salt air shortens the life of panel components whatever the brand. Rust on the bus bar or on breaker contacts is a routine finding on coastal inspections, and it is not fixed by replacing a single breaker.
