Six steps to check a contractor
Ask who will do the work
Get the full business name. Ask for the California contractor license number.
Check the license
Use the California Contractors State License Board website. Make sure the license is active and fits the work.
Compare written work plans
Each plan should list the same work, parts, permits, and items that are not included.
Ask about insurance and permits
Ask what insurance the contractor has. Ask if the job needs a permit or city check.
Read the payment and warranty terms
Know when you must pay. Read how changes and any warranty will work before you sign.
Keep your records
Save the contract, changes, bills, permits, equipment details, and final sign-off.
