Electrical Warning Signs

These signs may point to an electrical problem. An electrician can check the system and find the cause.

Breakers that keep tripping

A breaker may trip when a circuit has too much power or a fault. Do not keep resetting it. Call to find the cause.

A loose wire, heavy power load, bad control, or power change may make lights flicker. Note if it happens in one room or the whole building.

A hot part, burn mark, melting smell, or smoke can mean the system is too hot. Stop using it. For fire or smoke, get out and call 911.

Buzzing or sparks at a panel, outlet, switch, or appliance need fast help from an electrician.

An outlet may need repair if a plug falls out, power comes and goes, or you can see damage.

Some older homes have aluminum wires. An electrician can find this wire and check its connections.

Some old homes have knob-and-tube wiring. An electrician should check its condition, power load, and wire joints.

GFCI and AFCI devices guard against different risks. The right device depends on the circuit and where it is used.

If you see fire or smoke, get out and call 911. Do not open an electrical panel or touch damaged wires.
